The Coliseum

The Roman emperor Vespasian AD 69 to 79) began the construction of what is recognized as one of the most impressive testimony of early Italian architecture. His son emperor Titus dedicated-->


it in AD 80 and Titus's younger brother emperor Domitian completed the construction of the Coliseum that originally was named "The Flavian Amphitheater".

The games held at the inauguration of the Colosseo lasted for 100 days and nights, during which some 5,000 animals were slaughtered. Trajan once held games which lasted for 117 days, during which some 9,000 gladiators fought to the death.

Spanish Steps

The Scalinata Spagna (Spanish Steps), built in 1725 and named after the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See (located in the piazza), lead to the French church, Trinità dei Monti.


The fountain Barcaccia, is in the middle of the piazza. The Viale della Trinità dei Monti, at the top of the steps, leads to the Villa Medici, built in 1540 and acquired in 1576 by Ferdinando dei Medici.
